OK, I have to say that I'm a little enraged right now. Kanye West seems to think that by packaging a Hype Williams video in bright flashing neon lights, using a cute little girl walking through "the projects" in the opening frames, along with Rih Rih's TAH-DAH's so prominently featured, I will automatically praise this as being the most awe-inspiring set of visuals to ever compliment his most masterful sonic creation TO DATE!! Nope... I am ANGRY!!! Seriously, WDMC (WTF for y'all north americans lol)!?!?
The Video and the rest of my review (it's a DOOZY), after the jump.....
"All of the Lights" was supposed to be an epic video (I don't use the word "epic" lightly btw!) For Shame, everyone who STANs for Kanye (me included) should be rioting right now. OBVIOUSLY, if the video's producer spent more time planning out a more artistic direction and worked harder to collaborate with more of the artists on the track to coordinate schedules for filming, there would be more than Rihanna and Kudi in a photographer's loft dancing around in front of a fixed lens and flashing spotlights... GRRRRRR. Where's Alicia Keys?!?!? Drake? Elton John?? Ryan Leslie?? FERGIE even?? Come on people, please don't say that you are satisfied!
I BOUGHT YOUR ALBUM, KANYE! In a time where the rise of piracy in this digital age is eclipsing record sales, he managed to regroup and produce one of the best hip-hop albums of the past decade, ah lie?? In doing so, people consciously crawled out of their wired-in foxholes and made their way to Best Buy, HMV and Play De Record to PURCHASE the disc. DO BETTER, KANYE, PLEASE! I do not accept pandering, flashy, rap video junk and, unfortunately, those words MUST be used to describe this travesty. Remember "Power"? How about the leaked "Monster" visuals? What if we think back to Lupe Fiasco's introduction to the world in Kanye's vid for "Touch the Sky"??? Those were relative paradigm shifts in comparison to this setback. Are summa y'all serious in saying that this video is acceptable? Sheeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiit (Senator Clay Davis was pissed too lolol...)
Now, I am drawing most of my conclusions from a mainly emotional place, kind of like the reaction you sports fans have when Kobe and the Lakers lose to the Cleveland Cavaliers... Shocked and Dismayed. Neither do I have technical music video production experience, nor do I wish to debate anyone on the genius of Hype Williams. I have to say that this director's work continues to DAZZLE (reference Missy's "Supa Dupa Fly (I Can't Stand The Rain)" and Busta w/ Janet's "What's it Gonna Be".) Also, I have no problem with the notion that his work in this music video were very good, considering the short timeline and conservative budget (I'm speculating here!!) he must have been dealing with.
So, you have made it to the end of my tirade! You still asking about what am I saying here today??
Basically:
SMFH.
