REVIEW!!! The Help

Always better to read the book AFTER seeing the movie
Well, good people, I saw The Help this week. While I sat there watching the story unfold, I had a nagging, confused feeling. Reading this review by an American journalist, Valerie Boyd, (after the jump) cleared up my nagging feeling and made me realize something very striking!! It's 2011, y'all. We're in a new century, a new millennium. Notice how we haven't had a major studio movie like Mississippi Burning or A Time to Kill (Sam Jackson's paternalistic fury in that movie was golden) in movie theaters until this one?? The Help falls significantly short of the disgusting, hard-to-watch, heinously evil and yet historically accurate depictions of inequality in the South in feature films.

Then again, this movie focuses on the lives of Southern WOMEN, not men. Notice that??

The rest of my thoughts, along with the link to Valerie Boyd's review and Official Featurette of The Help (Video) after the jump...

RIP: Joel Chin, Director of A&R and Executive Producer, VP Records

Joel Chin (via www.vprecords.com)
I'm very saddened to write this RIP post. Another bright light in the reggae music industry was extinguished on August 16th, 2011. I first read about it IN MY TWITTER FEED (oh, y'all didn't know that I tweet?) Strangely, though, the news of Joel Chin's murder did not send the shock waves through Twitterville and Facebook-land like I expected. In fact, it was relatively quiet on the social media front. Nothing rang out yesterday, at all. Am I the only one, as a lay music person, that had a wave of grief for Joel Chin?? Did you know who he was or what he did for reggae music?? But really, another senseless murder in Jamaica, so I guess I can see why the masses are complacent (BIG SMH).

More after the jump....

Biscuit!! Mary J. Blige f. Diddy and Lil Wayne - Someone to Love Me (Naked)

Now, I've been looking for an excuse to rage today... This video didn't give me that opportunity. This record is a reminder of what GOOD RnB should sound like lol!! Mary J. is the queen for a reason and she could sing the entire Mandarin buffet restaurant menu without losing a fan. Diddy's grandpappy-hip-lockup-so-he-walk-with-a-cane bars aside, this is a really nice song. Can't wait to hear more from you, Mary!!

ENJOY!!

Biscuit!! Nas and Junior Gong f. Dennis Brown - Land of Promise (Official Music Video)

The Distant Relatives album is one my top ten rated collaborations EVER. This record "Land of Promise" ... If you don't know, now you know, ok? Enjoy the visuals :)

ENJOY!!!

REVIEW!! Kanye West - All of the Lights (Official Music Video)

OK, I have to say that I'm a little enraged right now. Kanye West seems to think that by packaging a Hype Williams video in bright flashing neon lights, using a cute little girl walking through "the projects" in the opening frames, along with Rih Rih's TAH-DAH's so prominently featured, I will automatically praise this as being the most awe-inspiring set of visuals to ever compliment his most masterful sonic creation TO DATE!! Nope... I am ANGRY!!! Seriously, WDMC (WTF for y'all north americans lol)!?!?

The Video and the rest of my review (it's a DOOZY), after the jump.....

Tech-o-sphere: I'm posting to my blog from my BB!!

How awesome is this?? I get to post anything that comes to my head - right from my phone!!

*Kristen Wiig's Target Lady screams "Fantastic!!"*

If I am at a show and I need to capture something really fast, this will really help!! Awesome!!!

Yes, now I finally see the point of having a smartphone lol.

That is all. The eunuch has spoken.

Good day.

Tech-o-sphere: Need an OUT? There's an app for that...

Soooooooo.... You are walking around your favorite store *cough*WINNERS*cough* and you run into that one person you absolutely cannot stand to idly chat with. A bigger person would stand there and hold back the rolling eyes while grunting out the obligatory "Hey!" and side hug.... Is that person ME?? Yes.

But wait!! During my nightly net browse, I run across the above photo on SlipperyBrick.com and, all of a sudden, such AWKWARD social exchanges are no longer a problem!!!

Now, all I need is a Samsung phone and the ability to stop time. That way, I can switch my SIM card out of my Blackberry Bold 9780 and into the new device. Then, I will resume time and "call myself" so that I can excuse myself from the lack luster conversation. Why stop time and do the switcheroo instead of just using that pause in the space-time continuum to run in the opposite direction?? Simple - I want to savor the moment where I am shaming the individual who is standing in front of me by taking a "call" that is more important than me speaking to a shallow waste of oxygen.

GOOD Night, lovelies!!

Biscuit!! Aloe Blacc - I Need a Dollar

If you, my faithful reader, ever caught the intro credits to HBO's "How to Make It in America," then you had an idea where this song came from (if not, i suggest youtubing some of the episodes because that show was amazingly entertaining.) I fell in love with the artist behind the theme song when I found out who he was:

Aloe Blacc - singer, songwriter, producer, all-around bad-ass dresser!

Here is Mr. Blacc performing that signature song, and first single off of his new LP, on Conan:

Enjoy!!

Twitter-sphere: Kanye West Clears the Air!

SOURCE: Twitter.com/kanyewest

Just as I log onto Twitter for the evening to check out what my favorite celebs and wannabes are saying, I see a post from Kanye West. If anyone remembers a small story from a few days back about Kanye commissioning a jeweler to make a watch with his face inside, then this twitter BLAST will squash all rumors! There's more than a watch - quelling Britney Spears and Taylor Swift rumors, along with news about his new single with Jigga, H.A.M., reaching #2 on the iTunes downloads chart.

This is what I love about Twitter: there is an opportunity for everyone to show who they are (or who they want to be) without the FLUFF. 140 characters or less, people. Succinct and efficient.
